  • The Art of the Broom

Gather together in the magical Larkswold creative space and weave your own hand broom in this intimate 2.5 hour workshop! Guests will choose their broom shape, fibre colour and style and then tie it all up with the twine colour of your choice. You will leave with a beautiful broom that actually cleans. You will learn the fundamentals of heritage handcrafted brooms (a pre-industrial heritage craft that uses no machinery and no electricity), as well as the processing and handling of fibre, various twine types, plus some broom history and lore. These pretty brooms are perfect for smaller spaces: potting sheds, artist studios, kitchen counters, camper vans, hearths, and book shelves - keep any small space tidy and looking lush! A broom made by you to last a lifetime and beyond. Recent Workshop Feedback: "Brilliant, enthusiastic tutor. Was thrilled to create a really beautiful broom." "I thought it was a great half day, and the tutor made a real effort to thoroughly teach the basics. She couldn't have done better." Please note: broom making is a surprisingly physical craft and each broom is constructed in one sitting with one continuous length of twine. Students should be prepared to work with shoes off (socks are fine) and seated in a chair for up to an hour, possibly more (feel free to bring a cushion).. Broom craft requires strength and dexterity in both hands and feet. Be prepared to engage your core, hands, arms, legs and back for extended periods. Broom making can be a real work-out! Dates: Sunday 24th May 10-12.30pm Friday 17th July 10-12.30pm and 1.30-4pm

  • Pottery On The Wheel

This fun workshop will give you an introduction to wheel-throwing, including shaping, centering, and refining your pots. You will learn to create functional pottery bowls using the potter's wheel, with personalised instruction and attention from Selby our fabulous pottery tutor. Having taught students for many years, Selby has never had anyone who hasn’t managed to make a pot! Throughout the session, all materials will be provided, and each student will have the opportunity to have two unique pieces fired & glazed by Selby. These pieces (probably one wheel thrown pot and one coil pot) will be fired and glazed, and ready for you to collect roughly three weeks after your session. You may make more items if time allows, but you will have to choose your favourite two pieces as the rest will be consigned to the 'Bucket of Doom' to be recycled! Finished pieces can be posted for an additional charge although we prefer collection for obvious reasons. With a small group size of just 8 students, you will receive plenty of hands-on guidance, allowing for a fun learning experience in a supportive, creative environment. There will be 4 pottery wheels in the studio & your time will be split between throwing and learning the classic art of making a coil pot at our benches. This is a perfect opportunity to explore the joy of pottery, whether for personal enjoyment or as the beginning of a new creative hobby. Don't forget you will need to squeeze in slices of all our delicious cakes plus coffee from our wonderful bean to cup coffee machine and maybe a little glass of bubbly before you leave us for the day.
