Remember when you were a child and hours disappeared into Lego castles, mud pies, or scribbled masterpieces? As adults, we often lose that sense of unpressured play. At Larkswold, we believe creativity is more than a hobby—it’s medicine for the mind.
The Science of Play

For those that know me, I do love a little chat about the brain and quite often the lack of brain cells, Em and I suffer from!
Neuroscientists have found that creative play reduces cortisol, the hormone linked to stress. When you engage in hands-on activities, your brain enters a “flow state,” a focused zone where time seems to stand still. This state helps quiet the noise of daily worries and refreshes your mind.
Now I know that sounds all very science-y, but Em and I see it all the time in the studio. People regularly look up and realise hours have gone by whilst they happily craft.
Crafting also improves problem-solving skills and memory. For example, weaving willow or lino printing requires concentration and planning, which exercises your brain in ways that differ from everyday tasks. These activities stimulate neural pathways, helping keep your mind sharp. Well its a movable feast - it does
Why It Matters
In a world filled with emails, deadlines, and endless to-do lists, play offers a much-needed break. It lets your brain rest and reset. Picking up a block to indian block print or working with your hands shaping clay brings a fresh perspective that no spreadsheet or meeting ever could.
Play encourages curiosity and experimentation without pressure. It reminds us that mistakes are part of learning and creativity. This mindset can carry over into work and personal life, making challenges feel less daunting.
How Larkswold Builds Play Back In

At Larkswold, we have created a screen-free space where you can reconnect with friends, family or just have a little me time. Sharing laughter and stories over a warm cuppa and a slice of homemade cake to the experience completes the recipe for wellbeing.
Regular creative play can improve your mood, reduce anxiety, and boost your confidence. It helps you approach problems with fresh eyes and find joy in small moments. At Larkswold, we see this every day and love seeing peoples natural creativity.
Right - I will shut up about all that neural stuff and get back to the exciting update on what new crafty things I have bought this week! Emma has been feeling a smidge under the weather, so I took it upon myself to buy her (Ok, I used Larkswold money, and I really, really wanted it anyway) this new tile painting thing, which you can put in the oven and it sets in 20 minutes. Luckily, it comes in a pack of two, so I can fully justify playing too. Very excited - will share the results when they are ready.

With the season of dried flower wreaths ramping up again, I have been carefully trying to not to look at the grand total on the order coming from our wholesaler with plenty of stunning new flowers and foliage options. The guests last week got me back in the wreath-making mood with their amazing creations.
Finally, I haven't pressed the button at the checkout yet, but I have an array of stunning mosaic tiles soon to be in my grubby little paws as well. My obsession with mosaic mirrors will live on.

Have a great weekend
All the best
Melinda
